Lab-Grown Diamond Guide
JEWELRY EDUCATION
A Modern Expression of Brilliance
Every diamond begins with light. At DIAMLUME, we choose lab-grown diamonds as part of our modern approach to fine jewelry, bringing together enduring beauty, thoughtful design, and personal meaning.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond created in a controlled technological environment rather than extracted from the earth. Lab-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, optical properties, and physical characteristics as mined diamonds. Their primary difference is origin.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Created?
HPHT
High Pressure High Temperature technology recreates conditions similar to those under which diamonds form beneath the earth’s surface. Carbon crystallizes around a small diamond seed under intense heat and pressure.
CVD
Chemical Vapor Deposition uses a controlled chamber containing carbon-rich gas. Carbon atoms accumulate on a diamond seed, forming a diamond crystal layer by layer.
After growth, lab-grown diamonds are cut and polished using the same types of techniques used for mined diamonds.
Diamonds, Not Simulants
Lab-grown diamonds should not be confused with diamond simulants. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials with different chemical and physical properties. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond with a laboratory origin; specialized equipment may be required to distinguish it from a mined diamond.
Understanding the 4Cs
Cut
Cut describes how a diamond’s proportions, symmetry, and polish interact with light. A well-cut diamond can display greater brightness, fire, and visual movement.
Color
Diamond color is commonly evaluated on a scale beginning with D, representing colorless, and continuing through increasingly noticeable levels of color. Your preferred metal can influence how a diamond’s color appears.
Clarity
Clarity refers to internal characteristics, called inclusions, and external characteristics, called blemishes. Many are microscopic and do not noticeably affect beauty without magnification.
Carat Weight
Carat measures a diamond’s weight, not its exact visual size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look different because of shape and cut proportions.
Diamond Shape
Popular shapes include:
- Round
- Oval
- Emerald
- Pear
- Marquise
- Cushion
- Radiant
- Princess
Each shape creates its own visual character. Round diamonds are associated with classic brilliance, while elongated shapes such as oval, pear, and marquise can create a longer appearance on the hand.
Diamond Grading Reports
Some lab-grown diamonds are accompanied by an independent grading report. Depending on the diamond and laboratory, the report may document:
- Laboratory-grown origin
- Shape and measurements
- Carat weight
- Color and clarity grades
- Cut, polish, and symmetry, where applicable
- Report identification number
A grading report describes evaluated diamond characteristics. It is not a monetary appraisal or a guarantee of market value.
Choosing Your Lab-Grown Diamond
- Prioritize cut when brilliance is your main concern.
- Select color in relation to your preferred metal and overall look.
- Consider eye-clean clarity rather than focusing only on the highest grade.
- Compare measurements as well as carat weight.
- Choose a shape that reflects your personal style.
- Review whether an independent grading report is included.
The most meaningful diamond is not simply the one with the highest specifications. It is the one that feels connected to you.
Caring for Your Diamond Jewelry
Diamonds are highly resistant to scratching, but they are not indestructible, and settings can wear over time. Store diamond pieces separately, avoid hard impact and harsh chemicals, and have frequently worn settings inspected periodically. For detailed cleaning instructions, see the DIAMLUME Jewelry Care Guide.
Brilliance with Meaning
At DIAMLUME, a diamond is more than a collection of grades. It is a reflection of individuality, intention, and the moments that become part of your story.
A diamond captures light. You give it meaning.
